Troubleshooting Guardian Print from Bedside Issues

Troubleshooting Guardian Print from Bedside Issues

Overview

Clinicians may print CTG trace and notes from the bedside portals using the 'Print' option in the 'Action' menu.

The portal will have a "printer" selected in it's settings. This "printer" is actually an IP address and port for the Central Station computer where the printer is set up. The portal will send the print job to the Central Station specified in its printer settings. On the Central Station there is a service (Guardian Print Server) running that will take the print jobs from the portals and pass them onto the print queue for the printer for the Central Station. This printer is usually the nearest printer to the Central Station in birth suite.

If all portals have stopped printing, it is best to start troubleshooting at the Central Station. If only one portal is not printing start troubleshooting with that portal.

Portal

Navigate to the "Spanner" settings screen by pressing on the spanner icon in the top right corner of the screen.

If a printer has not been assigned to this portal you will be asked if you would like to assign one now. Press 'Yes'.
If a printer can be found in the database you will be asked if you would like to use that printer. Press 'Yes'.
If printer cannot be found in the database, check the settings on the Spanner Screen. Under Network Settings check if there is a database and network connection.

If there is no network connection for the portal, the network issue will need to be resolved before you can print.
If there is a network and database connection, check with K2 whether there is a printer configured in the database.
If there is a printer assigned, or you have managed to successfully assign a printer to this portal but still cannot print check the Central Station.

Central Station and Printer

On the Central Station there is a service called the Guardian Print Server that takes print jobs from the portals and puts them into the print queue on the Central Station computer.

Open the Guardian Print Server by clicking on the K2 icon in the bottom right corner.

Double check the printer selected in the Guardian Print Server is correct. You can use the '...' to select a printer from the printers added to the Central Station computer.

If the desired printer has not been added to that computer it will need to be added.

NOTE: in the past we have found that printers added via ipp will not work with the Guardian Print Server. Please be sure to add the printer manually.
