This web based service allows consultants to view what is going on in each of the birth suite rooms from their smartphone/ tablet or laptop.
The remote viewing service (Clinical Web Portal) runs as a web application on a web server within the Hospital's network.
Important Patient Safety Notes
ALWAYS check with the onsite caregiver that the patient information being reviewed remotely is for the correct patient. Check names, dates of births and also check features of the CTG to ensure that remote user is viewing the correct information.
TAKE CARE when interpreting fetal monitoring remotely on devices that render the CTG on small displays. The limited resolution of the remote display and its physical size may subtly misrepresent the tracing. Subtle features may be less apparent on these smaller displays.
ALWAYS discuss the nature of the fetal heart rate monitoring with the local care giver and arrive at a joint interpretation. NEVER rely on the remote clinical data to form a diagnosis in isolation from the information presented local to the patient.
DO NOT access patient records unless you have a good clinical reason to do so. All access to patient records is logged and if unauthorised patient record access discovered, your rights to use this service may be revoked. As a user of the Clinical Web Portal you are responsible for maintaining patient data confidentiality when viewing case notes on your device. Please refer to the
Caldicott Principles of Patient Confidentiality for further guidance.
This service is intended for use by obstetricians and midwives ONLY and is NOT to be used to reduce or replace bedside care, nor in isolation from bedside monitoring.
Accessing Clinical Web Portal
Depending on your Hospitals network security, accessing Clinical Web Portal normally requires two steps:
1. VPN access to the Hospital's internal network
2. Authentication by Guardian Username and Password (can be via passthrough to Hospital's Active Directory)
Logging in to the Clinical Web Portal
Access the link to the Clinical Web Portal as provided to you by your Hospital to open on your device, then type in your login name and password and choose [Login].
Viewing a currently admitted Woman’s Record
A ‘chalkboard’ of currently admitted women in room number order will be displayed. Touch or click on the patient of interest to view their CTG, partogram (if enabled for your hospital) and notes.
The chosen woman’s current CTG will then be loaded. Choose [Show Menu] to list the available views available for display:
CTG; Partogram (if enabled for your Hospital); Notes; or Chalkboard (to choose another admitted woman).
When using a handheld touchscreen device, the CTG view can be scrolled left and right by dragging or flicking your finger across the screen; rotating the screen into landscape mode will rotate the view; pinching will shrink the image; and spreading your fingers apart will zoom in.
Retrieving an archived Woman’s Record
After logon, Search, Print & Logout icons will be displayed at the top right of your device’s screen (Printing from tablets or smart phones will require a compatible printer application e.g. AirPrint for Apple iOS devices). Choosing the Search icon will display the patient demographic search screen. Type in the patient identifier you wish to search by and click on the related [Search] button to display all possible matches.
Please note that on smart phone screens you may need to scroll down to see all of your search results.
Viewing an archived Woman’s Record
Once you have chosen the woman’s record you wish to access, their clinical notes are grouped into Woman, Baby(s) & Reporting views. Navigating through patient notes varies depending on your chosen device/ OS as follows:
MS Windows & Apple OSX computers: Notes groups are arranged in tabs across the top of the screen. Selecting a tab will display a list of available note categories for that group (Woman’s note categories shown below with demographic details displayed by default). Your chosen category will be highlighted in orange & any available information displayed to the right of screen.
Tablets & Smartphones: Demographic details for the chosen patient are displayed by default. To navigate to other note groups and categories, touch on the menu icon displayed at the top left of your devices screen. This will display the notes navigation menu. Choosing a category from this menu will subsequently display any available information & minimise the menu back to the menu icon.
NOTE! The tabs available at your Hospital may be different to those in this guide e.g. you may only have access to demographics and labour record. Other tabs will only be displayed if your Hospital is documenting the woman’s complete obstetric record in Guardian and/ or Athena.
Device Compatibility
These features have been tested and confirmed as functional on the following devices, operating systems and web browsers:
PC running Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 using either Firefox, Google Chrome, IE 10, 11*, Edge
Apple Mac running OSX Yosemite, El Capitan, Sierra using either Safari or Google Chrome*
Apple iPhone running iOS 8.1.2 or later using Safari + AirPrint compatible printer*
Apple iPad running iOS 8.1.2 or later using Safari + AirPrint compatible printer*
Samsung Galaxy smartphones running Android 4.2.2 or later using Google mobile browser (printing not tested)**
These features have been tested and confirmed as NOT functional on the following devices & operating systems:
PC running Windows XP Professional
Apple Mac running OSX Lion or older
These features have not been tested and therefore CANNOT be guaranteed as functional on the following devices & operating systems:
PC running Windows Vista
Smartphone running Windows phone
Printing from Android devices (To date we have not tested the printing feature from Android devices as there is no Operating System wide facility (such as AirPrint on Apple devices) to allow this.
Print Feature Output Quality cannot be guaranteed due to the wide range of devices and printers available on the market today. This is further complicated by the target printer’s margin and paper size settings.
The Central Station plays a critical role in forwarding information it has collected centrally onto the web server via the K2BroadcastRelay service so that it can be viewed remotely.
