Wall Mounting Advantages | Cart Mounting Advantages |
Reduces cable damage. Wall mounting the Portal & fetal monitor vastly reduces the need to constantly connect and disconnect cables, decreasing potential wear & damage to both cables & connectors. Space. Wall mounting also potentially frees up space in the room where a trolley would normally be required. Security. Fixing equipment in the room secures it against either theft or misplacement. Less 'clinical'. Wall mounted portals reduce the perception that the birthing room is a clinical area. Cost. If the wall position can sustain the weight of portal and arm, wall mounting cost is usually half that of a mobile cart. | Portability. The Portal and fetal monitor can be mounted on the same cart to become a single portable unit with the fetal monitor permanently connected to the Portal. Space. The cart holding the Portal & fetal monitor takes up a similar amount of floor space compared to an existing fetal monitor cart. Maintenance. Units can easily be swapped between rooms if required. Increases flexibility. As the Portal & fetal monitor are not in a fixed position within the birthing room, the layout of the room can more easily be tailored to suit either the patient or the midwife. Decreased implementation time. Carts & Portals can be assembled and software installed without K2MS requiring access to birthing rooms, with completed carts being placed in the rooms at the last minute. |

Fetal Monitor should be wall mounted also. If fetal monitors are portable, and shared between rooms, it makes sense for the Portal to also be portable and move with the fetal monitor otherwise the monitor must constantly be connected and disconnected from the Portal. Space. To wall mount a Portal there must be sufficient space at the preferred side of the bed to affix a wall channel to the wall at the correct height for the Portal (K2MS recommends that the channel is mounted between 1 and 1.2 metres from the floor). This may not be possible if there are services panels or other hardware at the head of the bed. Maintenance. Whilst wall mounting equipment makes it more secure, it also makes moving equipment between rooms when required extremely difficult. Limits Flexibility. Having the Portal and fetal monitor in a fixed position in the room can potentially limit positioning options for the bed as the Portal is required to be easily accessible for data entry. Increases implementation time. In order to wall mount Portals K2MS will require access to all rooms and locations where Portals are to be installed. Wall Strength. Unless the wall is solid, it will likely need strengthening in order to safely accommodate the 20Kg load of the Portal and its mounting hardware. Cost. Should the wall require strengthening, the cost of this will likely be considerably higher than the cost of cart mounting the Portal and fetal monitor. | New cart required. It is unlikely that K2MS will be able to mount the K2 Portal onto Customers existing fetal monitor carts, so new carts that are rated to support both the Portal and fetal monitor will be required. Possible cable damage. If the cart is to be moved between rooms, users must ensure that they disconnect both power and network cables from the wall in order to prevent damage to either the cable or connector. Security. Having equipment highly portable increases risk of loss due to theft or misplacement. Extra patient admission step. Users will be required to select the room they are in each time the portal boots up. Cost. Mobile carts are at least twice the cost of a wall mounted arm. This cost can climb if additional drawers and mounting attachments are optioned. |
